Cannes men and women celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema

Whether you’re a fashionista or a film fanatic, you’re probably aware that last Wednesday marked the opening of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, but it also marked a groundbreaking moment for Bollywood.

image

Screening the best in film for prestigious awards coveted by many in the movie making industry, this year’s festival also celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema. And world famous actor Amitabh Bachchan had the distinct honor of officially declaring the festival open.

    image

Bollywood royalty, Bachchan even shared a few words in Hindi. Wearing a glitzy black tuxedo, perhaps the star was still in character for his cameo in Baz Luhrmann’s breathtaking rendition of The Great Gatbsy, also the opening film of the festival. The look was a bit much for the ceremony, but hey, some might say he gets a pass.

      image

But the Indian woman of the hour at Cannes’ opening day was Vidya Balan. On the feature film jury this year, the sharp and sophisticated actress made her appearance in Sabyasachi Mukherjee outfit rich with Indian flavor—but not necessarily in a good way. Why don’t you be the judge?

Actress Sonam Kapoor was also in attendance, wearing an Anamika Khanna couture saree. Hints of gold trimming bordered the white lace piece with a long shoulder emphasizing-jacket worn over it. It was high fashion with a risk—a bold hoop-nose ring completed the look. Meanwhile, actress Frieda Pinto took the simple and classy route, looking cool and serene strolling the red carpet in a backless pink halter gown by Gucci with a glitzy coral and golden belt cinching her waist.

                 image

But it was the highly anticipated return of Cannes regular Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that was worth the wait. She attended the premiere of Inside Llewyn Davisey in a stunning black Elie Saab couture gown on Sunday that is sure to be one of the event’s highlights.

Also attending that screening was actress Mallika Sherawat. The celeb turned up to Cannes in this gorgeous D&G strapless, A-line dress. Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, meanwhile, made a proverbial splash at the screening of her film, Monsoon Shootout, wearing a fading blue, sweetheart neck gown.

The filmy-fashion fest continues until the 26th. Follow the red carpet coverage for more looks from the Indian lens.

Need we say more?

Well, it’s that time of year when leading artisans of jewelry take to the runway with their finest pieces. This time in New Delhi, new and inspired designers are making waves with diamonds and crystals and pearls, oh my, all through April 12 and 13. Making bold statements, “IIJW is an initiative to showcase India’s finest in jewellery, be it design or innovation…around the globe.”

But we’ll let the jewelry do the talking now…while you “ooh” and “aah” from the edge of your seats at some of the highlights from Day 1 of the event.

Ready for Red in 2013?

Everyone might be gushing over Emerald but there’s another color that will hold strong this year. The red lipstick craze kicked of a year of All-Red-Everything - gowns, nails, shoes and yes, jewels. Red is HOT and on-trend for the entire year (Dolce & Gabbana seem pretty serious about it!). And the great thing about this classic shade is that it goes with everything (red accents are especially fierce). Check out our top red looks for 2013.

We’re going straight to Bollywood first to highlight Jacqueline’s red lace sari blouse on this couture Sabyasachi outfit. Perfectly paired with crimson lippy. Amazing.

Malaika and Vidya recently turned up both wearing red. Malaika stuck to her sexy look while Vidya wore her favorite designer Sabayasachi.

Bipasha’s more casual look was a winner with the lighter lip and hot red nails.

Halle is seriously smoking in her red gown with gold accessories.

Trendsetter Rihanna made a memorable red carpet appearance at the Grammys with her All-Red-Everything look.

Cate shows off her perfect bod in this slinky number.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2013 Italian-theme was heavy on the red and gold.

Looking for red jewels? Here’s are our picks from BBJ (yes you can shop by color!)

And it wouldn’t be complete without some red bottoms. Check out this spikey number from Louboutin’s Spring collection!
